Seeing my enthusiasm and diligence, even my Professors have commented that I have a great future in General Surgery medicine. One day, a child was brought to the Operation Theatre as it was vital for him to undergo an operation for a repair of a Congenital Heart Disease. He was of age 3 or 4 which is a very young age to undergo a surgery. The childishness of that infant attracted me and I made a special bond with him before his surgery. When he was taken to Operation Theatre, he was at ease after seeing my face. I was happy that his surgery was successful and he became alright. This entire incident motivated me to confirm my decision to choose General Surgery as my specialization.
I am sure my interest in General Surgery will make me a good surgeon in future. I am sure my curiosity, professionalism and hard work will mould me as a people’s surgeon, who does surgery not only for money but for people’s benefit. I tried to console him and chatted with him for a while. I assured him this surgery would surely save his life and there is no threat to his life. Getting assurance from a Doctor made him more confident and energetic. He underwent surgery with great hope that this surgery will bring him back to his normal life. Before getting discharged from the hospital after surgery, he met me and thanked me for boosting his energy and cheering him up. I was happy with this incident, and it inspired my decision to be a General Surgeon like my father. I believe a Surgeon has a power to heal and alter the life of patients and I am sure with this profession I can heal lot of people who are in distress. During my clerkship, I have assisted several surgeries and have gained wide experience on assessing and dressing surgical wounds. And on observing a patient after operation I have got to know several things about their whole experience and mental and physical stress they have undergone while in surgery. I also gained understanding of working of an incision and its time of healing.
